A Diseased Father

by sambidhan

Sixty eight years old Ananta Uprety is suffering from Alzheimer disease, a medical disorder causing memory loss. He has this problem since three years and from that time has to be taken a lot of care. It is always said that Alzheimer patients has to be cured 36 hours a day as they forget everything and are just blank. they even forget to go to the bathroom. Ananta had a very obedient daughter Arati who took care of him but all the credit were taken by self oriented sons Bhanu and Girija whenever a doctor visited him.
Arati took care of his all needs and was determined to cure his father knowing that it does not have any cure. Ananta was a multimillionaire and before suffering from this disease simply hatred his daughter so his son had a very good chance of getting all the money that will be left about after his death so they had compelled Arati to look after him rather then sending him to hospital where he would be taken care medically.
Arati was an obedient daughter but in the past Ananta had never understood her. He always considered women to be a problem from the time his wife deserted him seeing that while earning money he didn’t had time for her. He considered women to be unfaithful and greedy so he never gave his daughter as much freedom as he gave to son but since the time of his illness his son had deserted him wasting his money and his daughter was looking after him.
He never recognized her the other day and she had to explain everything that she was his daughter and he was a millionaire and he was here to enjoy his retired life. Arati was a commerce graduate who knew all the business flaws but her brothers never let her poke her words at them saying that they were boys and they knew better than her. She had just one work and that was to be with the sick father and work for him. She didn’t felt bored doing that work as she loved her father more than anything.
Sometime Ananta remembered few things and spoke to his daughter in the manner he treated her in the past but instead of feeling disgust at being neglected she felt happy as she used to think that her father was being cured. But her joy was just for few minutes as doctor told her that the diseased subject might some day remember few things of his past or everything but it does not mean that he was getting cured because the next day he will forget everything.
Two more years spent, Ananta's condition was worse day after day. He was behaving like a baby, he required whatever thing he demanded immediately. He had developed insomnia, lack of sleep so Arati had to look after him round clock now. His sons were wasting his money which had troubled Arati but she could not do anything about it so just was silenced. She only remembered those days when her father worked day and night without thinking of anything and had established this huge empire.
One day, Ananta saw television and there a man was explaining about the will. He asked Arati what the will really is? She as usual started from him being a millionaire and having sons and then explained that will is something one writes to inherit his/her property to the trusted one. At hearing this he mentioned that he required a doctor and wanted to make his will too. At first Arati refused but his sons agreed thinking that the diseased men would name everything on their face and then they could live more happily than now.
That day, Arati was only asked to behave like a servant and the boys stayed in home treated well to the old diseased man. At the evening, their regular doctor Dr. Shah came with a lawyer. Dr. Shah was Ananta's old friend too and was impressed at the boys as he considered and it was presented to him that Bhanu and Girija were looking after the sick man. Mr. Shah asked every one to gather in the living room and explained how his sons were taking care of him. He didn’t mention a hint about his daughter. The lawyer too expressed that the will refers men and usually men are made the heir of the empire.
Ananta listened everything and then asked all of them to go out. The doctor nodded his head and asked everyone to clear the room and there was Dr. Shah, Ananta and the lawyer in the room. It took an hour to make his will. When the sons asked about the will, the lawyer said that he wished that his will would be read out after his death like in the movie he had seen.
After seven weeks of that incident the diseased Ananta died of suffering from pneumonia caused due to Alzheimer. Just after the thirteen days ritual everyone in the family were called at the reading of his will. Arati knew that it was his last days in the house and was sure that her brothers would kick her out once the will is read. The lawyers opened the file and started to read out, "I Ananta Uprety in full conscious, give my property to my offspring who took care of me at my sick days and after a long of consultation with my doctor and best friend Mr. Rohit Shah that …" When the name was about to be pronounced Bhanu and Girija were boasting their chest and were ready to grab everything and there finally the lawyer continued, "I wish my belonging to go to two people of my life whom I love a lot. The part of share of my land goes to Mr. Shah who was my doctor and best friend which amounts to Rs. 70 million ($1.03 million). The second share of my entire Niraula empire and the bungalow which amounts to Rs. 1095 ($16.11 million) to my daughter Arati who took care of me at my hard times."
As soon as these words were pronounced the words pierced like bullet to the two boys and they fell down left unconscious. When Arati inquired how did this happened Dr. Shah told her, "I told you that this diseased patients remember at once everything too so that was the day he had remembered everything but acted as if he was still sick and found his sons were flattering but you were taking the real care."
