I Dreamed Of Him
By La Belle Rouge
I dreamed of him when but a girl
while lying on my back in a field
of fragrant new mown summer hay
I saw his dark eyes overflowing
with abundance of authentic love
the good man who would someday
want the little unwanted girl child
I imagined approval smiling at me
from the midst of cottony clouds
dreaming , knowing even then
in naivety, in childish innocence
he was more than a just a dream
I dreamed when youth bloomed
into womanhood and the bodice
of my dresses transformed into
rounded contours of love’s promise
I dreamed and imagined, or did I
remember the sound of his voice
the loving touch of his fingertips
dreaming of the lips that would
kiss the honest image of who I am
warm lips that would heal my pain
I saw him in the face of those who
promised what only he could bestow
in the eyes of men who watched me
and drew close to me with their words
their insincere words of feigned love
remembering how once it felt to be
at peace, surrounded by his fortress
unfettered, unencumbered with fear
not frayed by abuse and confusion
as decades traveled past me
into lost regions only my mind
could journey back into again
the years absented themselves
but dreams never deserted me
summer gone, autumn slipping
winter hovering on my horizon
I dream of him yet, as always
heartened by his brief tender touch
I wait for our new door to open
