Now You See It. Now You Don't. (Contest Poem)
by rawland
you can sense it
when there’s an emergency
or when a disaster strikes;
you feel it
when you see our flag
flown at half-mast
or see a hero
step-up to the mike;
you see it
in the eyes of soldiers
as they salute
a comrade, slain;
or of those
who have simply
done their duty—
having nothing more
to gain;
you can hear it
in off-key, cracking voices
singing patriotic songs;
or respect-filled eulogies
which never mention any wrongs;
you can sense, feel, see, and hear it
yet, it’s less often than in the past;
the essence of America
needs to come first
if America’s to last.
